Running On Empty: Why Modern Life Leaves Us Depleted

Modern man is a curious specimen: overfed, overstimulated and perpetually exhausted. He carries the sum of human knowledge in his pocket and uses it chiefly to compare himself unfavourably with strangers.
We’ve engineered away hardship, then replaced it with anxiety, distraction and the nagging suspicion that everyone else is having a better time.

Much of Summer still sprawls ahead of us, languid and optimistic, but after this coming weekend, the northern half of the planet begins its slow retreat from the light. The days don't suddenly shrink; they simply start giving ground, minute by minute, to the long, patient advance of Autumn.
