With apologies to readers outside England - if you find yourself anywhere within the gravitational pull of Newcastle upon Tyne this Sunday, the 4th May (tomorrow!) - perhaps lured by the echo of Geordie optimism, you might do worse than drop in on my good friend, Tony.
He’ll be holding forth, in what I can only imagine will be his usual mixture of fire and forensic charm, on the topic of “The Perils of Modern Medicine.” Community Centre, George St., North Shields, Tyne and Wear. Arrive 4pm for 4:30pm start.
A subject, I might add, whose time has come - or possibly gone - depending on which pharmaceutical-sponsored journal you're subscribing to. In this age where we no longer trust the man with the stethoscope any more than the man with the clipboard, and where a prescription often comes with more side effects than sympathy, Tony’s talk promises to be not just timely, but tonic.
The organisers - bless them, still clinging to civility - suggest a modest £3 donation. That’s less than a flat white and considerably more nourishing.
Attend. You may leave with your faith in medicine shaken - but your faith in argument, wit, and dissent gloriously restored.
