I stumbled across this docudrama last week and watched it with open-mouthed fascination. Watch Dirty Business; it’s well worth your time:

What it lays out, with rather chilling calm, is that water companies aren’t in the business of water anymore. They’re in the business of money. The taps, the pipes and the reservoirs are just their props. The real product is profit, carefully siphoned off while the rest of us suffer the consequences and pay the bill.
It’s the sort of programme that leaves you staring suspiciously at your kitchen tap afterwards, wondering how something so essential ended up being treated like a slot machine for investors.
For your sake, and your family’s, watch it before you pour your next glass of water. It may make the taste feel rather different.
